Success in Your Doctorate III: The final spurt (FM VI-3)

WWB Area | Learning field
Research Management I Successful Doctorate

Starting point
The final phase of a doctorate requires all your remaining strength and determination as well as a good dose of motivation. Doctoral candidates have to bring an end to what has often been a long process, strategically planning and organizing everything involved and ultimately recognizing that the point has been reached where they can say that their dissertation is complete. They are often exhausted, sick of the whole thing and yet unable to let go. It is not easy to strike the right balance between perfectionism and pragmatism.

Aim
Participants develop a plan for organizing the final phase of their doctorate and bringing it to a successful conclusion. Individual bulwarks and solutions for making progress are identified. This course also touches on the publication of your thesis as well as life after a doctorate.

Content

  • Planning and checklist: What do I still need to do?
  • Bringing things to a conclusion: the dilemma between “I could do more” and “this has to be enough”
  • Dealing with crises and problems
  • Publishing your thesis: options and strategies
  • Review and prospects: What have I achieved to date? What are the next steps for me?

Methods
Input in the form of short talks, individual and group exercises focusing on self-reflection, role play, peer feedback, discussing and exchanging ideas and experiences. Max. number of participants: 12.

Notes
The course is intended for researchers from all disciplines in the final phase of their doctorates (3-9 months before submission deadline). This course builds on „Success in Your Doctorate I & II„; attending these events first is recommended but not a requirement.
